Street
Corner: The main feature of this painting is the shining patch of
road emphasized by the two dark figures placed against it. Notice how
the light windows shine against their dark surroundings.
The
Railway Bridge: Counterchange plays an important part in a painting
of this type, and care has to be taken to place lights against darks whenever
possible and to preserve pale areas. The halo effect needs careful handling.
The Coffee
Stall: The object here was to capture the misty drizzly atmosphere
of an inner city scene by night. The diagonals of the viaduct and roadway
providing a more pleasing composition. The figures added to provide tonal
contrast
Autumn in
East Leach: A mixture of hard and soft edges were administered here
to provide an impression of a misty morning
Santorini:

the landscape, and we have to look very closely at for those elusive tones.
The whitewashed walls of the church reflecting the blue of the sky, and
rich reflected colours in the shadows.
Twilight:
The colours and tones of late evening need careful handling, and this
painting underlined the need to emphasize the deep tones of the nearer
trees to provide contrast with the lighted windows
