Early Snowfall:
The farm gate here serves as a focal point with the line of hedge and
the tracks in the snow leading us there. The trees were painted in deep
tones to contrast with the snow which is simply the untouched watercolour
paper.
Frittenden Oasts:
Flat, variegated and broken washes all feature n this painting, while
the wet in wet technique produces the soft- edged reflections in the farm
pond.
Venetian Canal: The natural
scenery and architectural heritage of the lands bordering the Mediterranean
provide a wealth of subject matter. Several of the main construction lines
here, take us toward the church, and the elegant bridge prevents the eye
being carried out of the painting.
Street Market, Provence:
This painting is all about colour and tone. Prior to starting a painting
its quite useful to make a tonal sketch to sort out the lights and darks.
In The Austrian Alps:
Watercolour is perfectly capable of making powerful statements. Even the
deepest of tones will not be muddy if they are correctly applied.
Scottish Fishing Port:
The sky has been understated here due to the very busy nature of the scene
below. The cottage walls a re flat washes of pinks, browns, greens and
greys. The fishing boats are painted more strongly to stand out against
the background.
